What a weekend. Yesterday we awoke to 10 inches of fresh new snow. The grey clouds that hung over us all week were gone and the sunrise was pink and orange. We took the Toboggan my sister gaves us last Christmas into the woods and found a smooth, steep hill with a wide flat base. The peeps all loaded onto the sled and we scooted over the fresh snow. The air was cold and clear and the snow made the whole world seem clean and new.

I can forget everything on a clear cold morning in the fresh snow. It is a time when the grey darkness of the storm is passed and the snow is not yet crusted or melted into a dirty slurry. It is the perfect fleeting happiness that makes me feel guilty to be so happy.

On the way back from my run today, I found Carolyn and Sylvia pointing at the geese in the water below. We watched the geese and kicked snow into the water until they bored with us and drifted downstream. Sylvia gave me her gloves to carry and I put them in my pockets. We all held hands as we walked up the snowy hill. I had to be reminded that little girls walk slowly and to take small steps.

At home, we found that Teton did not eat the cookies that were in the porch because he was too busy barking at the door to follow us. We cut the cookies into bars and ate them for lunch. After lunch, I took a nap and Sylvia took every toy from her toy bin and threw it on the floor.

Later, I took my pencils and attempted to make a drawing of a farm. It was a nice start and I plan to work more on my drawing in the coming months. Winter is a nice time to sit and draw nature.

Even though I've been out of school for over ten years, I still have an academic mindset. My year begins in the fall and I feel like a new student with a fresh schedule of classes - excited to belong by pursuing knowledge. I return to my passions with renewed fervor and evaluate my progress against the previous Fall. I am in school again, except now I am my own teacher and everything except my job is an elective.

Last year, my required coursework was computer science, my electives were fencing, photography, music, and drawing. This year is about the same. I feel like a sophomore. My fencing has blossomed and despite a fairly recent round of fencing poorly, I feel like I'm doing well. My photographs are decent, I'm in places where there is beauty and I simply have to point the camera and click. I practice my piano every day and learn new pieces at least once every two weeks. I've added the recorder to my musical pursuits, so I'll be able to bring it to the pavilion to play. I feel like the humanity that I had at 20 has not slipped away with age and responsibility. So I shall salute to Autumn, falling leaves and hope as often as I can this year of my renewed sophomore status.
